Storm Spotter Training: The National Weather Service trains official County Storm Spotter groups each spring across the region. This year they are extending this training to public works professionals at this event. Attendees can expect to come away with a better understanding of factors that lead to destructive storms, visual cues which may provide a heads up to destructive weather, as well as ways to build situational weather awareness each day.
Debris Management Training:
Debris management planning, execution, and monitoring in accordance with FEMA requirements, environmental laws, and state regulations is an essential part of emergency management. This presentation will equip the public works professional with the knowledge essential to developing an effective and comprehensive debris management and monitoring plan. We will emphasize the importance of working with other first responders in developing the plan but also provide real-world examples regarding how Olathe’s solid waste and street maintenance divisions modified existing plans and procedures to help create our plan. We will also focus on essential learning objectives such as the importance of pre-identifying temporary debris management sites, understanding the types of debris and the process by which each should be handled, and developing pre-scripted communications for distribution to the public following a debris producing event.
